Fossil
A fossil is a remnant of a long-dead creature that has been turned to stone through the power of time and pressure. Fossils can be found all over the world, from the tiniest trilobite to the mightiest dinosaur.
However, the most interesting thing about fossils is not their scientific significance, but their ability to fool gullible tourists.
Yes, that’s right. Fossils have been fooling people for centuries. Every year, millions of tourists flock to various sites claiming to have “authentic” fossils, only to realize later that they’ve been had.
One particularly amusing instance occurred in the early 1900s, when a group of American tourists visited Europe and purchased what they thought was a genuine dinosaur femur. They proudly brought the bone back to the states, where it was promptly displayed in a local museum.
However, when scientists studied the bone, they found that it wasn’t a dinosaur bone at all. It was, in fact, the fossilized penis of a prehistoric whale.
Now, we don’t want to discourage fossil enthusiasts. Fossils are fascinating and can teach us a lot about the history of life on Earth. But if you’re ever in the market for a fossil, just remember: buyer beware.
You never know what you might end up with.
