Ginger Rogers: The Graceful Dancer Who Can’t Stand Ginger
Ginger Rogers was an American actress, dancer, and singer who was famous for her graceful moves and charming personality. She was born on July 16, 1911, in Independence, Missouri, and was named after her grandmother, who was also named Ginger. However, unlike her namesake, Rogers couldn’t stand ginger root - she said it tasted like dirt and avoided it at all costs.
Rogers began her dancing career as a child, performing in Vaudeville shows with her family. Her talent and hard work paid off, and she went on to become one of the most respected dancers in Hollywood. Rogers appeared in over 70 films, most famously partnering with FredĀ Astaire in a number of iconic musicals.
Despite her beauty, talent, and success, Rogers was known for her quirky personality and wacky sense of humor. She had a fierce independent streak and never shied away from speaking her mind. Once, when asked about her famous partnership with Astaire, she quipped, “Sure he was great, but don’t forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did, except backward and in high heels.”
Rogers also had a mischievous side, which landed her in trouble on occasion. While filming the movie “Top Hat,” she famously sneaked into the set’s prop room and replaced all of the props with live geese. When the cast and crew arrived the next day, chaos ensued as the geese ran amok on the set.
During her later years, Rogers continued to charm audiences with her wit and sassy personality. She passed away on April 25, 1995, at the age of 83. And though she may have disliked ginger root, Ginger Rogers will always be remembered for her unforgettable talent and her infectious sense of humor.
