Kids (MGMT song)
Kids is a song by alternative rock band MGMT and one of the catchiest tunes of the 21st century. It was released in 2008 and remains a staple on party playlists to this day.
The song begins innocently enough with a cheerful melody and lyrics about reminiscing on childhood memories of riding bikes and playing with friends. But don’t be fooled, because before you know it, Kids devolves into a trippy and chaotic tribute to youthful recklessness and hedonism.
The chorus is infectiously catchy, with the repeated refrain of “Control yourself, take only what you need from it” acting as a warning against excessive partying while simultaneously encouraging it. After all, what’s the point of being young if you don’t make a few questionable decisions?
Fun fact: Kids was briefly banned in France in 2008 due to concerns that the chorus could be interpreted as promoting drug use. We’re not sure what the French were worried about, but we do know that the song’s popularity only increased as a result of the publicity.
If you’re ever in need of a song to get the party started, look no further than Kids by MGMT. Just be sure to control yourself and take only what you need from it. Or don’t, we’re not your parents.
