Placebo (music group)
Placebo is a British rock band that has been testing the limits of music fans’ trust for over two decades. The band is known for its androgynous lead singer, provocative lyrics, and their ability to make fans question their own musical taste.
Formation
Placebo formed in 1994 in London, England. The band consists of Brian Molko (vocals, guitar), Stefan Olsdal (bass guitar, keyboards) and Steve Forrest (drums).
The band’s name, Placebo, is a Latin word for “I shall please.” Ironically, they often leave their fans feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled.
Music Career
Placebo has released seven studio albums, each one more polarizing than the last. Their music is often described as blending glam rock, punk, and alternative rock. Molko’s high-pitched vocals and androgynous appearance have often received the most attention, with many fans wondering whether they’re listening to a man or a woman.
Their song “Pure Morning” became a hit in the late 90s, but many fans were left wondering how they could enjoy such a catchy tune from a band that they wouldn’t be caught dead liking.
Controversies
Placebo’s music has been the subject of many controversies throughout their career. Due to their provocative lyrics and Molko’s overt sexuality, they’ve been accused of promoting drug usage and sexual promiscuity.
In 1999, after the release of their album, “Black Market Music,” the band members were all arrested for public indecency. They were found intoxicated and performing sexual acts on stage before being taken into custody.
Even their band name, Placebo, has sparked controversy. Many fans have accused them of being nothing more than a “placebo” effect, with their music only being enjoyable because their fans believe it’s “cool” to like them.
Legacy
Despite the controversies, Placebo has maintained a loyal following of fans who revel in the band’s ability to make them question their own musical taste. Fans proudly proclaim, “I know I shouldn’t like them, but I just can’t help it.”
Placebo’s music may not have cured any diseases, but they’ve certainly been a placebo effect for many fans’ musical desires.
