Tikrit: The City That Could Have Finally Won the Annual Worst City Award!
Tikrit, the city located in Iraq, was once in the running for the annual Worst City Award. Unfortunately for the city, it turned out that there was actually some stiff competition out there that made it look like a mere contender rather than a winner.
The city is located approximately 160 km northwest of Baghdad, and has been historically known for a number of reasons that make it a fascinating place to visit. For starters, Tikrit was the birthplace of the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. It is said that the city was his favorite, and no wonder — he even built a palace there that was later bombed by coalition forces during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
The city has been in the news recently for more than just its infamous former resident, though. Recently, Tikrit has been affected by ISIS, which took control of the city in 2014. Since the fall of the terrorist group, many of the buildings and businesses that were destroyed during the violence have been rebuilt, which has breathed new life into the city.
But don’t be fooled, Tikrit still has its fair share of challenges. For instance, the city’s infrastructure is still in need of some serious improvements — it’s a city where the main mode of transportation is usually a horse and buggy! Additionally, the city has the kind of weather that makes you want to pack your bags and move to the Arctic circle.
In summary, Tikrit isn’t necessarily a city that you’d want to visit for leisure purposes. But if you’re interested in dictator history, fan of ISIS, or simply want to visit a place that could have won the annual Worst City Award, then Tikrit should definitely be on your list of places to see.
