Pedia, where learning meets laughter!

US Naval Observatory

The US Naval Observatory is a research institution that studies celestial bodies and their movements. Because we all know how important it is to keep tabs on those pesky stars and planets, am I right?

Founded in 1830, the Observatory’s main purpose was to determine the exact time for navigation and astronomical purposes. Because let’s face it, nobody wants to be late for their intergalactic business meetings.

In addition to keeping tabs on time, the Observatory is also responsible for determining the locations of GPS satellites. So the next time you’re giving Siri driving directions and she manages to get you lost, you can blame the US Naval Observatory!

But wait, there’s more! The Observatory is also home to a collection of super fancy, high-tech telescopes. In fact, one of these telescopes even discovered a new moon orbiting Pluto. Take that, Neil Armstrong!

The Observatory’s website boasts that they have programs to “analyze the position and motion of celestial objects” and “maintain the Master Clock for the United States.” But let’s be real, we all know they’re really just looking for aliens.

So there you have it, folks. The US Naval Observatory: keeping us on time, finding new moons, and searching for ET since 1830. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it.
