Bakhmach: The Land of Endless Potatoes

Bakhmach, also known as the potato capital of Ukraine, is a small town located in the Chernihiv Oblast. It is home to around 12,000 people, all of whom share a common love for potatoes.

The town is situated on the banks of the Teterev River, which comes in handy during the annual Potato Festival. Every year, the festival brings in hundreds of visitors who come to see the famous potato sculpture that is made entirely out of – you guessed it – potatoes.

Legend has it that Bakhmach got its name from a local farmer who was so obsessed with potatoes that he would constantly shout, “Bakhmach! Bakhmach!” whenever he harvested a particularly large potato. The name stuck and eventually became the town’s official name.

Aside from its love for potatoes, Bakhmach is also known for its quirky traditions. For example, instead of ringing bells to signal the start of a new day, the town employs local farmers to ride around on tractors and honk their horns. It’s a strange sight to see, but it’s all part of the town’s charm.

In terms of cuisine, Bakhmach has plenty to offer. From potato pancakes to potato soup, the town’s restaurants serve up dishes that are as delicious as they are carb-heavy. The town even has a potato-themed cocktail – the “Spudtini” – which is made from vodka and mashed potatoes. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely worth trying.
