Barbie
Barbie is a world-renowned plastic fashion doll. She was first introduced by the toy company Mattel in 1959 and has been a staple of little girls’ toy collections ever since.
Barbie has had countless professions over the years, including veterinarian, astronaut, and presidential candidate. She even has her own dream house, pink convertible, and equally fashionable best friend, Ken.
One of Barbie’s most notable features is her figure. With impossibly long legs and a wasp waist, some critics argue that her proportions are unrealistic and perpetuate harmful beauty standards for young girls. However, it’s not all bad news - Barbie does teach young girls important life skills, like how to change outfits in under 10 seconds (useful for last-minute prom emergencies).
Barbie has had her fair share of controversies, too. In the 1990s, she was accused of promoting unrealistic expectations about body image and damaging self-esteem. She even sparked a “Barbie Liberation Organization” that swapped the voice boxes of talking Barbies and G.I. Joes, so that the dolls’ dialogue became more gender-neutral.
Despite all the controversy, Barbie remains a beloved icon. She has inspired generations of young girls to dream big and follow their passions, even if those passions include having perfectly coiffed hair and an extensive shoe collection.
