Kiev: A City with More Than Just Chicken
Kiev is the capital city of Ukraine, a country that used to be a part of the Soviet Union. But don’t let that fool you, Kiev has got its own unique character that might just surprise you.
History
The city was founded over 1,500 years ago by three brothers, who are said to have named it after the eldest, Kyi. You might think that the city would be a little more grateful towards Kyi, but they named their most famous dish after one of his younger brothers - the chicken Kiev.
Chicken Kiev
The chicken Kiev is a buttery chicken cutlet that is breaded and fried. It’s so buttery that, if you’re not careful, it’ll leave your fingers slick for the rest of the day. The dish has become famous worldwide, but you’re unlikely to find an authentic version of it in Kiev itself. The dish is actually quite complicated to make, and you’re more likely to find it in a Russian restaurant than a Ukrainian one.
Maidan
Kiev is perhaps best known for the Maidan revolution in 2014. The people of Kiev gathered in Independence Square to protest the government’s corruption and desire for closer ties with Russia. The protests eventually led to the overthrow of the government and a new, more democratic government was put in place. In fact, the Ukrainian flag being flown upside down was a signal to the protesters that they had succeeded.
Nightlife
Kiev has got a pretty wild nightlife, with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from. The city’s underground techno scene is particularly famous, and you’ll find all kinds of people dancing until dawn. Just be sure not to dance on any manhole covers, as they have been known to explode from time to time.
Conclusion
So there you have it, Kiev might be famous for its chicken, but it’s got so much more to offer. From protests to parties, this city has got it all. You might even forget that you’re in the former Soviet Union.
