November - The Month of Unexpected Weather and Failed Resolutions
November is the eleventh month of the Gregorian calendar, best known for its changing weather, Thanksgiving celebrations and the time when people realize that their New Year’s resolutions are not happening.
The month is named after the Latin word ‘novem’, which means ‘nine’. November used to be the ninth month in the Roman calendar, but when January and February were added, it shifted to the position of the eleventh. It’s right there in the name, and yet, thousands of people fail to remember that it’s no longer the ninth month of the year.
One of the defining features of November is the unpredictable weather. One day it can be sunny and warm, and the next day you can wake up to a blanket of snow. You never know what you’re going to get with November, reminding us all of that infamous quote from Forrest Gump: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
In the Northern Hemisphere, November is the month that is synonymous with the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. The trees are now barren, and the mornings are much darker, much colder, and much more depressing. It’s the time when we start thinking about Christmas and start wondering whether we’re going to be able to afford all those gifts we promised ourselves.
November is also the month where we begin planning Thanksgiving dinner. This holiday, celebrated in the United States and Canada, is a time for families to come together and consume copious amounts of turkey and pumpkin pie. It’s a day where we give thanks for all that we have, even though we all know that we’re just looking forward to the Black Friday sales the next day.
But let’s be real here, November is also the month when we start realizing that our New Year’s resolutions are just not happening. All the motivation and drive we had at the beginning of the year to exercise, learn a new language or quit smoking has faded away. We start thinking of all the things we could have done, should have done, and now, it’s just too late. We begin to console ourselves with pumpkin spiced lattes and our favorite TV shows’ new seasons on Netflix.
In conclusion, November is a month of unexpected weather, family gatherings, and the realization of failed resolutions. But hey, at least we survived another year, right?
