Ornithorhynchus anatinus: A Wacky Wonder of Nature
Ornithorhynchus anatinus, commonly known as the platypus, is a peculiar creature native to eastern Australia. It is a semi-aquatic mammal and a member of the monotreme family, which includes only five extant species of egg-laying mammals. But the platypus is not just any old monotreme. If the male is impressed, he will chase after the female, grasping onto her tail with his front claws and holding on for dear life. The two will then spin around in circles like a wild dervish until the male finally gets the chance to fertilize the female’s eggs. We’re not sure what kind of impression this leaves on potential spectators, but we’re guessing it’s a spectacle not to be missed.
