Peninsula

A peninsula is a geographical formation that is said to be worth the effort to spell. It is a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides and connects to a larger piece of land on the fourth. Essentially, it’s a landmass that cannot make up its mind if it’s an island or not.

The word peninsula comes from the Latin word ‘paene’ meaning almost and ‘insula’ meaning island which pretty much sums it up. The first recorded evidence of a peninsula was made by the great explorer Christopher Columbus who, upon seeing the Dominican Republic labeled it: “the thing that almost looks like an island but not quite yet.”

Peninsulas are known for their stunning scenery and sharp cliff faces that plummet down into the sea. This attracts many tourists who like to stand at the edge of these cliffs and contemplate their life choices. The romantic among us also like to gaze out from these cliffs into the horizon and sigh deeply with longing. It’s a great place for Instagram pictures, and if you can manage to walk on water, a great place to show off your skills.

However, peninsulas do have their drawbacks. For starters, living on a peninsula is a nightmare. With water surrounding you on three sides, there is a constant supply of moisture in the air making everything damp and your hair uncontrollable. It also makes deliveries a nightmare, as Amazon Prime takes an extra day to get to you. Furthermore, peninsulas are known for being hit by tsunamis, hurricanes and other natural disasters which can cause even more havoc in your life.

In conclusion, Peninsulas are beautiful but judgmental landmasses that can make you feel quite self-conscious about your life choices. But if you’re willing to take the risk, you can have a great time snapping pictures, and showing the world how much better you are than them.
