Psyche (mythology)
Psyche was a well-known figure in Greek mythology as the goddess of the soul, but her story was anything but straightforward.
First of all, her name sounded like the latest wellness trend that can only be achieved through purchasing overpriced essential oils.
Psyche was a mortal who fell in love with Cupid, the god of love. But Cupid was known for his mischievous ways and decided to mess with her by disguising himself and only visiting her at night so she could never see his true form.
Talk about a toxic relationship.
But Psyche wasn’t going to give up that easily, oh no. She decided to take matters into her own hands and got some advice from Venus, the goddess of beauty (who also happened to be Cupid’s mommy dearest).
Venus, clearly not a fan of Psyche, gave her a series of seemingly impossible tasks to complete before she could even get close to Cupid. One of them included sorting a giant pile of seeds in just one night.
I mean, can you imagine? You just want to fall in love and suddenly you’re stuck doing agricultural work like some kind of glorified farmer.
But once again, Psyche was not deterred. She got some help from some handy ants who sorted the seeds for her (thanks, nature) and even managed to sneak a peek at Cupid while he was sleeping.
At this point, we’re pretty sure Cupid was just playing hard to get.
Long story short, Psyche eventually won Cupid’s heart and they lived happily ever after. Or did they? Considering this is Greek mythology we’re talking about, there’s probably more drama to come.
But let’s just focus on the fact that Psyche proved that persistence and the help of some tiny insects can get you what you want in life. And that should be a lesson that we can all take to heart.
