Rigel (Star)
Rigel, also known as Beta Orionis, is a blue supergiant star located in the constellation Orion. It’s infamous for its massive size, intense brightness, and its tendency to blind amateur astronomers.
Discovery
Rigel was discovered by an ancient astronomer who stumbled upon the star after partying too hard the night before. Legend has it that after consuming large quantities of fermented grape juice, the astronomer looked up at the night sky and said “Whoa dude, that star is like, super bright!”
Characteristics
Rigel is so big that it makes Shaquille O’Neal look like a garden gnome. It’s approximately 120,000 times brighter than the sun, and its diameter is 74 times larger. It’s also incredibly hot, with surface temperatures of over 12,000 degrees Celsius. To put that in perspective, that’s like standing in the middle of a volcano during a heatwave.
Cultural Significance
Rigel has been noted in many cultures throughout history. In ancient Greece, it was believed to be the eye of Orion the Hunter, which could explain why Orion is always depicted wearing stylish shades. In some Native American cultures, Rigel was thought to be the source of all light in the universe.
