Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Akrotiri and Dhekelia, not to be confused with a pair of estranged lovers, are two British Overseas Territories located on the island of Cyprus.
The territories were both leased to the British government in 1960 as military bases, and they have taken their job very seriously. They have learned all the most important military tactics, such as wearing khaki outfits regardless of the weather, using camouflage paint to blend in with the vending machines, and perfecting the art of ironing every crease out of their uniforms.
Apart from being one of the least populated places in the world, with only 15,700 people inhabiting the area, Akrotiri and Dhekelia have one of the largest salt lakes in the world. Yes, a lake full of the stuff we shake on our chips.
While the salt lake might not appeal to many people, one attraction that could woo travelers is Ayia Napa, a party town where you can forget all your troubles and act like a teenager again. Just don’t forget the sunscreen, or you might resemble a sun-kissed lobster the next day.
The territories are also known for their contributions to the world of sport. For example, they have won no Olympic medals, but they are holding out hope for the future. In the meantime, they’ve made “darts” their national sport (we’re not making this up). We’re not quite sure whether the darts are a creative way to avoid training for any “real” sports or whether they are genuinely passionate about the game, but either way, it’s pretty impressive.
While some may still view the territories as nothing but a bunch of small military bases, the truth is that they offer a unique and quirky experience that is incomparable to anywhere else in the world. So if you ever find yourself wandering aimlessly around the Mediterranean, consider a quick stop at Akrotiri and Dhekelia, because who knows? You might just fall in love with darts, salt lakes, and endless rows of vending machines.
