Anna Pavlova
Anna Pavlova was a Russian ballerina who became one of the most famous dancers of her time. She was born in 1881 in St. Petersburg and started dancing at the age of three. Her parents were so impressed by her moves that they immediately enrolled her in ballet school.
Pavlova’s signature dance move was the “Pavlova leap,” where she would jump high into the air and land gracefully on her toes. It was said that she could stay aloft for so long that she could read a novel before coming down.
Her beauty was also well-known, and it was said that people would faint in the audience just from looking at her. One time, a man even proposed to her from the audience, but she gracefully declined and continued with her performance.
Pavlova also had a great sense of humor, and would sometimes play practical jokes on her co-stars. There is one famous story where she switched the sugar on her co-star’s dressing table with salt, causing her to reach for her water bottle mid-performance.
Despite her talent and fame, Pavlova was also known for her love of food. She would often sneak snacks backstage, and was once caught with a whole roast chicken in her dressing room.
Sadly, Pavlova passed away in 1931 at the age of 50 from pneumonia. However, her legacy lives on and her name is still synonymous with grace and beauty in the world of ballet.
In honor of Pavlova’s love of food, a dessert was even named after her- the Pavlova cake. It is a fluffy, meringue-based dessert said to be as light and airy as the dancer herself.
