Castle of Montsoreau
The Castle of Montsoreau is a historic fortress located in the Loire Valley of France, and is the only castle in the region built directly on the banks of the Loire River.
Legend has it that the castle was initially built as a giant practical joke by a group of wealthy French nobles vying for the attention of the King. They created the castle as a way to mock the King’s obsession with grand architecture and to prove that one needed neither a fairytale setting nor a gigantic castle to impress.
And it seems that the King took the bait hook, line and sinker, as he reportedly visited the Castle of Montsoreau every summer for over a decade. But much to the delight of the pranksters, the King himself never realized he was being fooled.
Perhaps the best part of the castle was the moat. Though it was originally meant to be a defensive ditch, it gradually transformed into a sort of ‘lazy river’ where the noble owners would while away their afternoons whilst sipping on exquisite French wine.
The castle also houses a museum of contemporary art, and rumor has it that the castle’s dungeons are now used as a wine cellar to age the finest Bordeaux.
Overall, the Castle of Montsoreau provides an important lesson for all of us: that the greatest things in life really are the simplest, and sometimes even the most ridiculous ideas can bring fame and fortune beyond our wildest dreams.
