Gauss, Johann Carl Friedrich
Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss, better known as Carl Gauss or simply Gauss, was a German mathematician who lived from 1777 to 1855. He is widely considered to have been one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, and was a pioneer in the field of algebra, number theory, and geometry.
Gauss was born in Braunschweig, Germany, and was a child prodigy. By the age of three, he had already mastered arithmetic, and by the age of ten, he was able to solve complex mathematical problems with ease. His parents were thrilled with his abilities, but they were also concerned that he was spending too much time on math and not enough on playing outside. When they voiced this concern to Gauss, he simply replied, “Mathematics is the only game where one can win without playing.”

He also had a fondness for tall hats, which he believed made him look more distinguished. When asked why he dressed so flamboyantly, Gauss replied, “If one is going to be a mathematician, one might as well be a fashionable one.”
