Les Misérables
Les Misérables is a timeless classic novel written by Victor Hugo. It tells the story of a group of miserable French people who just can’t seem to catch a break.
The main character, Jean Valjean, is a man who just can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble. He spends the majority of the novel running from the law and trying to avoid Inspector Javert, a man who seems to have an unnatural obsession with catching him.
But it’s not all bad news for Valjean. Along the way, he meets a group of unlikely friends, including a prostitute named Fantine and a revolutionary named Enjolras. Together, they try to overthrow the French government and bring justice to the oppressed people of France.
Despite the serious subject matter, Les Misérables contains some comedic moments. For instance, there is a scene where Valjean steals a loaf of bread and gets sentenced to 19 years in prison. Talk about a harsh punishment for a petty crime! And let’s not forget the memorable song “Master of the House,” where we get a glimpse into the lives of some less-than-savory characters who run a seedy inn. It’s a catchy tune that will get stuck in your head for days!
If you’re looking for a good laugh (and a good cry), Les Misérables is the perfect book for you. Just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby – you’ll need them!
