Material (from Latin “materia,” meaning “substance”) is a term that has been used throughout history to describe anything from cloth to plastic, from wood to metal, from rocks to crystals. In short, anything that can be used to make something else can be classified as material.

The invention of material is often attributed to the famous inventor, Wile E. Coyote, who first discovered that a round rock can be used to crush the head of his enemy, Road Runner. Since then, humans have taken the idea of using materials to a whole new level.

Sometimes, materials are also made by combining different substances together, such as plastic, which is formed by mixing chemicals like ethylene and propylene.
