Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a large, extinct volcano located in Tanzania, Africa. It is the highest peak in Africa, and due to its altitude, it is often referred to as the “Roof of Africa”.

Legend has it that the mountain was formed when a group of ancient gods decided to duke it out in a rock-throwing contest. The resulting pile of rocks ended up being so tall that it reached the heavens. The gods were so impressed by their handiwork that they decided to turn it into a mountain, and thus, Kilimanjaro was born.

The first recorded ascent of Kilimanjaro happened in 1889, when a German geographer named Hans Meyer decided that the view from the top would be worth the breathlessness and altitude sickness. It’s said that when Meyer reached the summit, he let out a scream of joy that was heard all the way back in Berlin. Though it’s unclear whether this is true or not, it’s still pretty impressive considering the distance.

Since then, Kilimanjaro has become a popular destination for hikers and adventure-seekers alike. Some people choose to climb it in order to challenge themselves physically, while others do it simply for the Instagram likes. Whatever your motivation may be, just make sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and an extra bottle of water. Because nothing extinguishes the excitement of climbing a mountain quite like hypothermia and dehydration.
