Mountain Man
The Mountain Man—a.k.a. “the rugged outdoorsman” or “the ultimate survivalist”—is a unique breed of human that thrives in the harshest and most remote regions of the world.
Typically clad in a sturdy flannel shirt, faded jeans, and a well-worn pair of boots, the Mountain Man is a master of self-reliance. He lives off the land, preferring wild game and natural foraging to the pre-packaged convenience of civilization. He can start a fire with nothing but two sticks and a dash of bravado.
The Mountain Man is also a wizard with a hunting rifle or bow and arrow. He can track game for miles, moving silently through the dense underbrush like some kind of superhuman predator.
The Mountain Man’s rugged good looks and fearsome independence have made him a popular figure in literature and entertainment. He has been the subject of countless books, movies, and TV shows, from Jeremiah Johnson to Grizzly Adams to Bear Grylls.
However, not all Mountain Men are created equal. Some are true survivalists, capable of living off the land for weeks on end. Others are weekend warriors, dressed up in costume and trying to prove their worth with a day trip to the local national park.
Regardless of their skill level, the Mountain Man is a fascinating and entertaining character. So the next time you encounter one in the wild, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation. But be warned: if you get on his bad side, he just may challenge you to a bare-knuckle boxing match or a rousing game of “Who Can Eat the Most Raw Squirrel Guts.”
