Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda, also known as “The Bella of Lake Garda” and “The Town of Wind,” is a picturesque town located in the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige.

Founded in the early 9th century AD by a group of monks who were tired of the rowdy party scene in nearby Desenzano del Garda, Riva del Garda quickly became a popular destination for those seeking a quieter, more scenic vacation spot.

Although it’s the second-largest town on Lake Garda, Riva del Garda is still small enough to feel intimate and charming. The town’s narrow, winding streets are lined with colorful buildings, cafes, and gelaterias, providing ample opportunities for both people-watching and indulging in delicious Italian treats.

But what really sets Riva del Garda apart is its famous winds, which blow through the town with a ferocity that can only be described as “unpredictable.” Visitors are advised to hold onto their hats (or risk them being blown out to sea) and to avoid trying to fly kites unless they want to end up in Switzerland.

Despite the wind, Riva del Garda’s surrounding mountains and crystal-clear lake make it a prime destination for outdoor activities. Visitors can hike or bike the nearby trails, take a dip in the lake (which, despite being cold enough to freeze a penguin, is surprisingly refreshing on a hot day), or try their hand at windsurfing (if they dare).

For those looking for a more relaxed vacation, Riva del Garda also offers plenty of opportunities to simply soak up the sun or enjoy a glass of local wine while taking in the stunning views.

So whether you’re a thrill-seeker looking for an adventure, a nature-lover seeking some peace and quiet, or simply someone who loves a good gust of wind, Riva del Garda is the perfect vacation spot for you. Just don’t forget to pack a sturdy pair of sunglasses and a hat (and maybe a parachute, just in case).
