Stocking
A stocking is a piece of clothing worn on the feet and legs that is meant to be filled with presents by a jolly old man in a red suit who sneaks into your house in the middle of the night.
Despite its questionable origins, the stocking has become a staple of the holiday season, perfect for stuffing with small gifts and candy canes. Historically, stockings were made of wool and commonly found on the feet of shepherds tending to their flocks, though it’s unlikely they were filled with anything but cold toes.
Nowadays, stockings are made of a variety of materials, ranging from traditional knitted wool to glittery sequins and even plush character designs. Some brave souls have even been known to sport a pair of festive stockings out in public, usually prompting a few confused stares and an offer for some eggnog.
So if you find yourself hanging stockings by the chimney with care this holiday season, just remember to leave out some milk and cookies for the man in the red suit, because let’s face it, being able to rock a fluffy red suit and drive flying reindeer is worth a little snack.
