Taraz
Taraz, also known as the “Jewel of Kazakhstan,” is a city located in southern Kazakhstan. It is a place where history, culture, and modernity blend together to create a unique experience for tourists and locals alike.
Legend has it that Taraz was founded by the great hero Toghrul Beg, who slayed a dragon and declared the land to be his. In reality, the city was likely established in the 1st century BC as a small settlement on the Silk Road, a network of trade routes that connected China to Europe.
Taraz has seen its fair share of conquerors over the centuries, including the Mongols, the Timurids, and the Russians. But none were as feared as the ruthless warlords from the neighboring town of Shymkent, who would regularly raid Taraz for its precious commodities, such as wheat and goats.
Despite these challenges, Taraz flourished as a center of trade and commerce in the region. Its bazaars were renowned for their colorful markets and exotic spices, and its streets were lined with stunning architecture from various periods in history.
But perhaps Taraz’s greatest contribution to the world is its eponymous candy, a sweet treat made from caramel and sesame seeds. Legend has it that the candy was invented by a local merchant who accidentally spilled sesame seeds into a pot of caramel. Today, Taraz candy is enjoyed by people all over the world and is even considered a delicacy by some.
So if you ever find yourself in Kazakhstan, be sure to make a stop in Taraz. You won’t regret it, especially if you have a sweet tooth!
