Totally Spies!
Totally Spies! is a cartoon series that aired from 2001 to 2014, much to the delight of tween girls and boys who secretly loved it. It starred three high school girls - Sam, Clover, and Alex - who were secretly employed by the World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP) to save the world from mad scientists, evil villains, and general tomfoolery.
Characters
Sam
Sam is the smart one, with super-spy gadgets and a knowledge of martial arts that would put Jackie Chan to shame. She’s also the most level-headed of the three, which means she has to deal with Clover’s diva tendencies and Alex’s…wait, what does Alex do again?
Clover
Clover is the fashionista of the group, and spends most of her time picking out outfits and flirting with guys. She’s also prone to getting captured by the bad guys, but always manages to escape with her makeup still perfectly intact.
Alex
Alex is…uh…she’s…well, she’s there. I think she’s supposed to be the athletic one? Honestly, I can’t remember anything about her other than the fact that she’s blonde. Sorry, Alex.
Villains
Totally Spies! had some of the most delightfully ridiculous villains on television. There was Mandy, the high school mean girl who somehow got her hands on a giant robot; Terrence, a mad scientist who turned people into giant vegetables; and of course Jerry, the girls’ boss at WOOHP who was always getting kidnapped and brainwashed.
Then there was Tim Scam, the villain with the most villainous name ever. Seriously, if your name is Tim Scam, you’re either going to be a supervillain or a used car salesman. Tim Scam was both, as he sold evil gadgets on the black market and had his own theme music.
Gadgets
Speaking of gadgets, Totally Spies! had some of the coolest ones around. There was the Compowder, a combination computer and makeup compact; the Jetpack Backpack, which allowed the girls to fly around like Iron Man; and the Catsuit, which…okay, let’s be real, the Catsuit was just an excuse to draw the girls in skin-tight outfits.
Legacy
Totally Spies! may not have been the most critically acclaimed show, but it has garnered a dedicated fanbase over the years. It’s also been referenced in other media, such as the video game Team Fortress 2, where one of the playable characters has a pink catsuit and references the show’s catchphrases.
In conclusion, Totally Spies! may have been silly and ridiculous, but it was also a lot of fun. It’s the kind of show that you can watch with a bowl of popcorn and not have to worry about taking anything too seriously. Plus, it had three kickass heroines who proved that you don’t need a superhero suit to save the world - just some cool gadgets, a killer outfit, and a whole lot of girl power.
