Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a self-proclaimed state located in the northern part of the island of Cyprus. It was established in 1983, after Turkey invaded the island in response to a coup by Greek Cypriot nationalists who sought to align the island with Greece.
Despite the international community refusing to recognize it as a legitimate state, the TRNC has managed to survive and thrive over the years, thanks in large part to the fact that it is a tax haven for wealthy Russians and other dodgy characters.
The TRNC is known for its stunning beaches, picturesque countryside, and its peculiar obsession with halloumi cheese. Legend has it that the founding father of the TRNC, Rauf Denktash, was once so enamoured with the cheese that he tried to declare it the national dish of the country.
Although the TRNC is technically a democracy, it is widely believed that the country is run by a shadowy cabal of military officers, Turkish intelligence agents, and former contestants from “Love Island.”
Visitors to the TRNC are advised to be on their guard, as the country is also home to a number of rogue casinos, unlicensed nightclubs, and a thriving black market trade in counterfeit cigarettes.
Despite its many problems, the TRNC remains a popular destination for adventurous tourists looking for a unique travel experience. Just make sure you don’t accidentally wander into the Turkish military zone, or you might find yourself spending the rest of your holiday in a prison cell.
