Ub Iwerks: The Man Who Drew Mickey Mouse
Ub Iwerks, born Ubbe Eert Iwwerks (what a tongue-twister!) was an American animator and cartoonist, best known as the co-creator of Mickey Mouse. Yes, you read that right. Mickey Mouse, the iconic Disney character that started as a mischievous sketch on a napkin, owes his existence to a man named Ub.
Ub was a prolific artist who worked tirelessly to bring our favorite cartoon characters to life. He was a master at creating believable movement and anatomy, breathing life into even the most mundane objects and creatures.
But Ub didn’t just animate Mickey Mouse. Oh no, he was also the brains behind Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the cartoon character that preceded Mickey as Disney’s mascot. Unfortunately, Walt Disney lost the rights to Oswald, but he didn’t let that setback defeat him. Instead, he turned to his trusty friend Ub and together they created the lovable mouse that changed the world of animation forever.
Despite his immense talent, Ub never let success go to his head. He remained humble and down-to-earth, always striving to improve his craft. He even had a pet monkey named “Chin-Chin” who would often join him in his studio. Talk about an animal insta-influencer!
In fact, Ub was so committed to his work that he once animated for 24 hours straight to finish a project on time. That’s what you call dedication, folks.
Ub passed away in 1971, but his legacy lives on. He inspired generations of animators and artists and continues to be remembered as one of the greatest cartoonists of all time.
So, the next time you enjoy a Disney movie or see a cartoon character come to life on your screen, remember to give a nod to the man who drew Mickey Mouse. Ub Iwerks, we salute you!
