2016: The Year That Wasn’t So Great
Introduction
2016 was a year that will forever be remembered as a dumpster fire, a train wreck, a hot mess, and any other descriptive adjective you can think of. From celebrity deaths to political chaos, this year was one for the books, in all the wrong ways. Let’s take a look back at what made 2016 so special, in the worst possible way.
The Year of the Celebrity Death
2016 was the year that Death decided to go on a killing spree of some of our most beloved celebrities. It started with the loss of David Bowie, who left us on January 10th. From there, Death took the lives of Prince, Muhammad Ali, Gene Wilder, and Carrie Fisher, just to name a few. It seemed like every time we turned around, Death was snatching up another legend. Can we please have a redo on this year, Death? Pretty please?
The Political Circus
If there was one thing that made 2016 unbearable, it was the political circus that played out in the United States. It seemed like every day brought a new scandal, a new meme, or a new reason to weep for humanity. The presidential election was a dumpster fire of epic proportions, and it left the country divided and angry. And don’t even get us started on the countless debates and Twitter feuds that accompanied it.
Harambe
We couldn’t write an article about 2016 without mentioning Harambe, the gorilla who captured the world’s attention (and our hearts). When a child fell into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, Harambe became an internet sensation, with memes and hashtags popping up everywhere. Sadly, Harambe was shot and killed, and the internet mourned his loss for weeks on end. Rest in peace, Harambe. You deserved better.
Conclusion
2016 was a year that will go down in history, but not for any positive reasons. From the celebrity deaths to the political chaos, this was a year that we’d all rather forget. Let’s raise a glass and toast to the coming year, 2017, and hope that it’s a little less of a hot mess. Cheers!
