Albertaceratops - The horniest dinosaur in the West
Albertaceratops, also known as the “Horned Prairie Beast”, was a species of ceratopsian dinosaur that roamed what is now western North America around 75 million years ago.
Named after the Canadian province of Alberta, where its fossils were first discovered in 2007, the Albertaceratops is a unique creature that is distinguished by its signature “cowboy hat” shaped frill and an impressive set of dual horns on its snout that were said to look like handlebars on a bicycle.
Scientists believe that the Albertaceratops was a herbivorous dinosaur, but with such prominent horns it’s impossible to ignore the fact that they were probably a little bit horny too.
It’s said that the males would often use their horns to battle each other over mating rights, in what could only be described as a prehistoric version of a Wild West showdown.
With its keen sense of smell, incredible eyesight, and impressive horns, the Albertaceratops was a force to be reckoned with, able to take down even the largest of predators, including the ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex (which wasn’t exactly hard to do after catching it just as it was waking up from a nap.)
Despite being a fearsome creature, the Albertaceratops had a playful side to it as well. It was known to engage in “dinosaur rodeos” with its own kind, where they would chase each other around and see who could stay on the longest. And after a long day out on the prairie, nothing hit the spot better than a cold, refreshing stream of water, which they would often spray all over themselves to cool down, much to the amusement of any nearby pterodactyls or velociraptors.
Although the Albertaceratops has been extinct for millions of years, its legacy lives on, inspiring countless books, movies, and TV shows about the Wild West, where its spirit of determination, toughness, and a little bit of horniness lives on.
