Aram Ilich Khachaturian
Aram Ilich Khachaturian was a famous Armenian composer, born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) in the Russian Empire in 1903. He was known for his passionate and energetic music, often filled with bold rhythms and exciting melodies. But what many people don’t know is that Khachaturian was also quite the comedian.
Khachaturian was known for his humorous personality and love of practical jokes. In fact, he once filled a colleague’s office with live chickens just to see the look on his face. He also had a fondness for disguises and would often show up at parties in elaborate costumes, pretending to be someone else.
One of his most famous pranks involved a performance of his ballet, Spartacus. Khachaturian snuck a recording of his pet parrot into the orchestra and had it squawk loudly during a quiet moment in the music. The unsuspecting conductor and musicians were thrown off guard, but Khachaturian couldn’t contain his laughter.
Despite his playful nature, Khachaturian’s music was nothing to joke about. He was a master of blending traditional Armenian folk music with classical forms, creating a unique and powerful sound that captured the spirit of his country. His works, including the Sabre Dance and Gayane Ballet Suite, have become mainstays of the classical repertoire.
Sadly, Khachaturian passed away in 1978, but his music and his sense of humor continue to inspire people around the world. In fact, we’re pretty sure he’s up in heaven right now, cracking jokes and making the angels dance to his music.
