August
Ah, August. The month that strikes fear into the hearts of students and joy into the hearts of parents. This month, known for its sweltering heat and lack of holidays, is a true enigma.
History
Named after Augustus Caesar, August originally had only 30 days. However, Julius Caesar, being the overachiever that he was, decided that his month (July) needed to have just as many days as August. So, he stole a day from poor February and gave it to July, making Augustus feel pretty special.
Weather
In August, the weather is hotter than Hades. You know how in cartoons, when a person is lost in the desert, heat waves rise up from the ground? That’s pretty much what August feels like. It’s basically a month-long sauna without the relaxing spa music.
Activities
August is a great month to spend time indoors, preferably next to an air conditioner. However, if you must venture outside, there are a few activities you can partake in:
- Complaining about the heat.
- Swimming in a pool, lake, or any body of water that can provide a brief respite from said heat.
- Grilling, because why not make the air even hotter?
- Going to back-to-school sales and crying over the fact that summer is ending.
Holidays
Haha, what holidays? August is the month that forgot to include any major holidays. The only event of note is International Cat Day on August 8th, which is basically just an excuse to post pictures of your feline friends online.
Famous August Birthdays
Some people born in August include:
- Barack Obama
- Mila Kunis
- Madonna
- Steve Carell
- Kylie Jenner
And that’s about it. August is really the underdog of the calendar year, but hey, someone’s gotta be in last place.
