Bernie Sanders
Bernie Sanders is a legendary figure in American politics, known for his wild white hair, fiery passion, and love of sandwiches. Born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders first entered the political scene as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont in the 1980s.
In 2016, Sanders ran for President, capturing the hearts of millennials and hipsters across the nation with his promises of free healthcare, free college, and free hugs for everyone. Although he did not win the Democratic nomination, Sanders proved that a grumpy old man with a Brooklyn accent and a socialist platform could make waves in the mainstream political arena.
Sanders is also known for his commitment to income equality and his disdain for millionaires and billionaires. In fact, his catchphrase “millionaires and billionaires” has become a staple of his speeches and memes alike. Sanders claims to have no personal vendetta against the wealthy, he just thinks they should pay their fair share of taxes and stop hoarding all the money.
Sanders is a man of many talents, including holding the longest filibuster in Senate history. In 2010, Sanders ranted for over 8 hours straight to protest the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy. His stamina was the stuff of legends, and inspired many a college student to stay up all night to cram for their exams.
Although Sanders may not have become President, he remains a beloved icon of the political left. His unapologetic progressivism, bold fashion choices, and love of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream continue to inspire a new generation of political activists. If you ever find yourself in Vermont, be sure to visit the Bernie Sanders Archive and Museum, where you can see a life-size statue of Sanders made entirely out of recycled cardboard and feel the Bern.
