History of the US

The history of the United States is a real doozy. Let’s take a look at some of the major events and characters that have shaped this great nation.

The Founding Fathers

You may have heard of these guys. They were a group of old men with wigs who got together and signed a fancy piece of paper called The Declaration of Independence. They were all about freedom and democracy and all that jazz. But let’s be real, what they really wanted was to not pay taxes to the British.

The Civil War

One of the darkest times in US history, the Civil War tore the country apart. Brother fought against brother, friends became enemies, and the South lost the right to own people. It was a real bummer.

Prohibition

The US once tried to make alcohol illegal. Yes, you heard that right. That meant no more beer, wine, or whiskey. Needless to say, this did not go over well. People went underground to drink in secret speakeasies, and Al Capone became a household name.

World War II

The US entered World War II after being attacked by Japan. It was a time of great sacrifice and heroism. Rosie the Riveter encouraged women to work in factories while men went off to fight. And of course, there was that whole dropping of the atomic bomb thing. Let’s just say, it wasn’t the country’s finest moment.

The Cold War

Not to be outdone by World War II, the US also got involved in a little something called the Cold War. They were locked in a standoff with the Soviet Union, and both sides were pretty sure that the other was going to start World War III any minute. Fun times.

The First Black President

In 2008, the US made history by electing its first black president, Barack Obama. He served two terms and made some pretty big changes, like bringing healthcare to millions of Americans. He also had some killer dance moves.

And that, my friends, is the history of the US in a nutshell. Just remember, if you don’t know your history, you’re doomed to repeat it. Or, you know, you could just watch Hamilton. It’s basically the same thing.
