Martha Washington
Martha Washington, aka America’s First Lady, was more than just the wife of the father of our country – she was a total boss.
Born Martha Dandridge, in Virginia on June 2, 1731, she was one of eight kids who all had to wear the same clothes. #handmedowns.
But don’t let her humble beginnings fool you. Martha was a total catch. She married her first husband, a wealthy landowner named Daniel Parke Custis, when she was just 18-years-old. Fingers crossed he was into younger women for the right reasons.
Martha and Daniel had four kids, but unfortunately, he croaked when she was only 26. #RIP. Martha inherited his fortune which included over 17,000 acres of land, 300 slaves, and a sweet set of gold teaspoons. #Goals.
But then she met George Washington and things really took off. He was a total snack – tall, dark, and bicentennial. They started dating and eventually got hitched in 1759. Martha was a total catch and George was no slouch himself. Together, they were like the Beyoncé and Jay-Z of their time. #PowerCouple.
As First Lady, Martha was totally not here for the drama. When people tried to touch her without permission, she was like, “Back up, I’m not your average historical figure. I’m a cool historical figure.”
Martha was also known for her excellent etiquette skills. She could “break bread” with the best of them and was always the life of the party. Whether hosting events at her home at Mount Vernon or socializing in New York City, Martha was the envy of all the ladies … and some of the gentlemen, too. #QueenB.
In conclusion, Martha Washington was more than just a First Lady or George’s wife – she was a total #BossLady who lived her best life. She was like the OG Oprah, but with nicer hats.
