Ohio
Ohio is a state located in the Midwest region of the United States that is known for its ability to constantly surprise you.
History
The state was once home to various Native American tribes such as the Shawnee and the Miami. In the 17th century, French explorers established trading outposts in the region, and then later it became a part of the British Empire.
In 1803, Ohio officially became the 17th state to join the Union, marking a turning point in the nation’s history. However, its biggest claim to fame is being the birthplace of the Wright Brothers, who invented the airplane - despite the state having barely a hill in it that they could jump off.
Geography
Ohio is a state of paradoxes. It has beaches, but no ocean. It has hills, but no mountains. It has a river that catches on fire, but no active volcanoes.
The state’s capital and largest city is Columbus, which is also home to the largest public university in the country, Ohio State. However, most Ohioians don’t really care about college football or the NBA, they just love Skyline Chili and Buckeyes, which somehow are not nuts but a delicious chocolaty/peanut butter-filled treat.
Culture
Ohio is one of the most diverse states in the Midwest, with a mix of rural and urban areas that are home to farmers, suburbanites, and city dwellers alike. Its residents are known for being friendly and welcoming, except when they’re fighting over who invented the tomato juice or Aaron Burr’s body, both of which claimants are from Ohio.
The state is also home to rock n’ roll legends such as the Black Keys and Devo, and on the weekends, Ohioans can be found at any number of music festivals across the state, dancing to folk tunes or heavy metal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ohio is a wonderful state filled with contradictions, friendly people, and an unbelievable number of presidential visits just to get a vote. If you ever find yourself in Ohio, be sure to visit the aforementioned Skyline Chili and try their signature Cincinnati-style chili, where instead of a bowl, you ladle the chili directly onto spaghetti. That sounds like a wild combination, and it is. It’s Ohio, after all.
