The Super Famicom: Not as Super as its Name Suggests!
The Super Famicom (or SNES for our English-speaking friends) was a video game console released by Nintendo in 1990. While it may sound like a superhero from a cheesy 80s comic book, the truth is that it’s not as super as its name suggests.
Don’t get us wrong; the Super Famicom had its moments. It was home to many classic games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Street Fighter II. It also had a sleek design, and its iconic purple color scheme is sure to bring back fond memories for any gamer who grew up in the 90s.
But let’s not forget the flaws, people! For starters, the Super Famicom had some of the most ridiculous console accessories of all time. Remember the Super Scope? It was a massive bazooka-shaped controller that you had to stand up to use. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea? And don’t even get us started on the Super Game Boy, the peripheral that let you play Game Boy games on your TV. Because you know what everyone wants from their home console? To play games that look like a blurry mess on a giant screen.
Moreover, the Super Famicom had some weird games that let us question the sanity of their developers. Do you remember Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure? It was a game released in 1994 where you played as a superhero whose superpower was the ability to flick boogers at his enemies. Or how about Lester the Unlikely, a game where you played as a nerd who stumbled upon an island of monsters and had to use his intellect to escape? It was a game that made every gamer ask themselves, “Why am I playing this again?”
In conclusion, as much as we love the Super Famicom, let’s just admit that it wasn’t really super in the comic book hero sense. While it was home to many great games, it also had some questionable accessories and some games that were just plain weird. But hey, it’s all part of the nostalgia, right?
