Turdus migratorius – The Migratory Turd

Turdus migratorius – commonly known as the American Robin – is a migratory songbird that is a common sight across North America. While its feathered friends might admire its beautiful orange breast and melodic singing voice, there’s a reason why some of us call this bird the ‘Turd’-us migratorius.

One of the most distinctive features of the American Robin is its…well…poop. Yes, that’s right, these birds have an impressive ability to produce copious amounts of excrement with surprising accuracy.

It’s not uncommon to see cars, statues, and even unsuspecting pedestrians covered in robin droppings during the spring and summer months. It’s no wonder we often refer to them as ‘flying toilets’.

Despite this unfortunate reputation, robins are an important and valuable part of our ecosystem. They play a vital role in dispersing seeds, controlling insect populations, and are a food source for a variety of predators.

In addition, the sight of a robin perched on a branch or hopping across a lawn can bring a smile to even the grumpiest of faces.

So, the next time you find yourself under fire from a particularly enthusiastic Turd-us migratorius, take solace in the fact that it’s all part of nature’s grand plan, and maybe grab a pack of wet wipes.
