MTV: The Channel That Used to Play Music
MTV, also known as Music Television, is a cable channel that was once dedicated to playing music videos around the clock. However, those days are long gone, and MTV now focuses on reality TV shows that leave viewers questioning the meaning of life.
Founded in 1981, MTV was a beacon of hope for music lovers who wanted to see their favorite artists perform on screen. From MichaelĀ Jackson to Madonna, MTV gave us some of the most iconic music videos of all time. But let’s face it, the real reason we tuned in was to watch Beavis and Butthead laugh at music videos they deemed “stupid.”
In the ‘90s, MTV began airing shows like The Real World and Road Rules, which introduced us to the world of reality TV. While these shows were entertaining at first, they quickly turned into a hot mess of drama, fights, and questionable behavior. The days of watching music videos and discovering new bands were replaced by watching strangers living in a house and shouting at each other.
With the rise of streaming services and YouTube, MTV has struggled to find its place in a world where music videos are available at the click of a button. Their attempt to bring back music programming with TRL in the early 2000s was short-lived, and they’ve since resorted to airing shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom.
But hey, if you’re in the mood to watch a group of twenty-somethings get drunk and argue in a hot tub, then MTV is the channel for you. Just don’t expect any actual music.
