Colorado: Where the Air is Thin and the Skies are Blue

Colorado is a state located in the western region of the United States. It is known for its breathtaking views, thriving ski resorts, and colorful history (pun intended).

The state name comes from the Spanish word “colorado”, which means “colored red”. This is a reference to the rusty color of the Colorado River that runs through the state, as well as the red sandstone formations found in many of its national parks. However, Colorado’s nickname “The Centennial State” is not due to the state’s love of celebrating anniversaries but rather, it became a state on August 1, 1876 – 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

One of Colorado’s most famous attractions is the Rocky Mountains, which span over 3,000 miles and are home to Colorado’s highest peak, Mount Elbert. While the mountains may seem intimidating to some, Coloradoans have learned to coexist with their towering neighbors, using them as a playground for skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and mountain biking.

The state is also known for its vast array of craft beer, and its famous “green” stereotype. So, you can easily find breweries on every corner, and well to be honest, dispensaries too. We don’t encourage anyone to break the law, but hey, when in Colorado…

Colorado’s capital and largest city is Denver, which is also known as the “Mile High City” due to its elevation of 5280 feet above sea level. Denver is a pretty chill place as long as you don’t mind seeing people wearing flannel shirts and beanies on 95-degree summer days.

These include the Garden of the Gods, a majestic set of red rocks in Colorado Springs, and the Maroon Bells, which are considered the most photographed “14-ers” (mountains over 14,000 feet) in the state.
