Eris (goddess)
Eris is the goddess of chaos, discord, and all-around mischief. She is known in Greek mythology as the ultimate troublemaker, and is often depicted with a wicked grin on her face and a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
According to legend, Eris was the one responsible for starting the Trojan War by throwing a golden apple inscribed with the words “To the Fairest” into a party attended by the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Naturally, each of the goddesses claimed the apple for herself, and the ensuing argument led to a fierce rivalry that eventually resulted in the Trojan War.
Aside from her penchant for causing chaos, Eris is also known for her sense of humor. She loves nothing more than playing pranks on gods and mortals alike, and her favorite target is her brother Ares, the god of war. Eris has been known to sneak up on Ares and tickle him until he cries, or to hide his armor and weapons just before a battle.
Despite her reputation as a troublemaker, Eris is generally well-liked by the other gods and goddesses. Her infectious laugh and irreverent attitude make her an entertaining presence at parties, and many of the gods enjoy her company.
Ironically, Eris was not actually invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, a fact that she took great offense to. In retaliation, she showed up anyway and threw a golden apple inscribed with the words “To the Prettiest” into the crowd, starting the infamous argument that would later lead to the Trojan War.
In modern times, Eris is sometimes referred to as the “goddess of internet trolls,” due to her penchant for causing chaos and discord online. She is also a popular subject in modern literature and film, often portrayed as a seductive and cunning villainess who enjoys causing trouble for the protagonists.
