March: A Month of Many Misfortunes
March, the third month of the Gregorian calendar, is often considered the most misfortunate month of the year. It is a time of unpredictable weather, ceaseless sniffling, and awkward St. Patrick’s Day parties that leave everyone feeling green - but not in a good way.
The month is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. But despite its martial origins, March often feels like a month under siege. The weather is changeable and moody, with sunny days giving way to blustery winds and sudden downpours. One minute you’re sweating in a t-shirt, and the next you’re shivering beneath a blanket.
March is also the time of year when many people suffer from allergies. Pollen, dust, and other irritants fill the air, leaving people sneezing, sniffling, and rubbing their eyes. It’s hard to look cool and collected when you’re constantly blowing your nose and wiping your eyes on your sleeve.
But perhaps the biggest misfortune that befalls March is St. Patrick’s Day. This is a holiday that’s supposed to be a celebration of Ireland and all things Irish, but has turned into an excuse for people to wear green and act like drunken fools. Bars and pubs are packed to the gills with revellers, all trying to outdo each other with their green clothes, plastic leprechaun hats, and fake Irish accents.
And then there are the March Madness basketball games. For many, this means endless hours of watching teams they’ve never heard of playing games that nobody cares about. For others, it’s a time of heartbreak as their favourite team suffers a crushing defeat.
But despite all these misfortunes, there are some things to love about March. The first signs of spring begin to emerge, with flowers blooming and birds chirping. It’s a time of renewal and rebirth, when the world starts to poke its head out of a long winter slumber.
So while March may be a month of many misfortunes, it’s also a time of hope and possibility. Who knows what joys and sorrows the coming weeks will bring? One thing’s for sure - it won’t be dull!
