Nokia, Finland: Home of the “Brick” Phone
Nokia, Finland, a small town located in southern Finland, is famous for being the birthplace of one of the most iconic mobile phone brands in history, Nokia.
Founded in 1865 as a pulp mill, Nokia quickly branched out into other industries, such as rubber and cable manufacturing. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the company made the shift to mobile phones, and boy did they make a bang!
Nokia’s first mobile phone, the Mobira Cityman 900, was released in 1987 and weighed a whopping 11 pounds. But that wasn’t the only thing that made it stand out. Its brick-like design earned it the nickname of the “brick” phone, and it quickly became a symbol of success and status.
But Nokia didn’t stop there. They continued to innovate and release new models, each one more advanced and sleeker than the last. The Nokia 3210, released in 1999, was a particularly popular model, thanks to its customizable covers and game, “Snake.”
And who could forget the Nokia 5110, with its famous “indestructible” body? It could survive a fall from a 2-story building and still make calls like nothing happened. It was the Chuck Norris of phones.
While Nokia’s reign in the mobile phone world eventually came to an end, the company’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who owned and cherished their “brick” phones. And it all started in the small, unassuming town of Nokia, Finland.
So, if you ever find yourself in Finland, be sure to pay a visit to Nokia and take a selfie with the town’s infamous brick monument. Because, let’s face it, nothing screams “I’m hip and retro” quite like posing with a giant brick phone.
