The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a 1993 science-fiction comedy film that is based on the hit video game franchise created by Nintendo. It is widely considered to be a cult classic, and by “cult,” we mean a group of people who have watched it and can’t believe what they saw.
The movie is directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, who apparently hired some random screenwriters and told them to write whatever they wanted, as long as it involved Mario and Luigi going on a crazy adventure in weird costumes.
The cast of the film includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood, such as Oscar winners Bob Hoskins as Mario and Dennis Hopper as the villainous King Koopa. Not to mention, John Leguizamo as Luigi, which isn’t exactly an “Oscar winner,” but he’s great in everything he’s in.
The plot of the movie is, well, let’s just say it’s not what you’d expect. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Manhattan, where two Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, end up getting dragged into an alternate dimension called Dinohattan. Yes, that’s right. Dinohattan.
In Dinohattan, the brothers find themselves embroiled in a conflict between the evil King Koopa and the peaceful inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom. Yes, Mushroom Kingdom. Are you following this?
The film is filled with plenty of wacky moments, like Bob Hoskins attempting an Italian accent, John Leguizamo wearing a green hat and suspenders, and Yoshi the Dinosaur being a cross between a cute puppy and a Velociraptor.
One of the most memorable scenes from the movie is when Mario and Luigi use a pair of de-evolution guns to turn two henchmen into chimpanzees. Because, you know, that’s a normal thing that happens in the Mario games.
Overall, the Super Mario Bros. movie is a hilariously bizarre adaptation of the beloved video game franchise. It’s so bad that it’s actually kind of good. It’s a must-watch for anyone who wants to see Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo dress up like Mario and Luigi and then spend two hours in a surreal, mushroom-filled dystopian hellscape.
