Greenville: A Humorous Encyclopedia Entry

Welcome to Greenville, the city that’s named after the famous green color that’s found throughout the city. Or maybe it’s not. We’re not entirely sure.

Located in the state of South Carolina, Greenville is considered to be the cultural and economic hub of the Upstate region. And just like any other city, Greenville has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s. But honestly, who wants to talk about the boring stuff? Let’s dive into the quirks that make Greenville a truly unique city.

The Stinky Cheese Man

You might have heard of The Gingerbread Man, but have you met his cheesy cousin, The Stinky Cheese Man? This infamous sculpture can be found in downtown Greenville and is rumored to bring good luck to anyone who dares to touch it. Just be warned, the cheese might stick to your hand.

The Greenville Ottoman

You know those big block letters that spell out “Hollywood” in Los Angeles? Well, Greenville has its own version of that. Say hello to the Greenville Ottoman, a large piece of furniture that sits outside a furniture store in the city. We’re not entirely sure if it’s supposed to be there for decoration or if someone just forgot to move it.

The Big Clock

Every city has a clock tower, but Greenville has taken it to the next level. The clock itself is a massive piece of art that sits atop a building in downtown Greenville, reminding us all that time is just a construct and that we should all live in the moment. Or something like that.

Bob Jones University

While Greenville is known for its vibrant arts scene and diversity, it’s also home to one of the most controversial universities in the country: Bob Jones University. The school is famous for its rigid rules and regulations, as well as its peculiar mascot, the Fighting Fundamentalist. We’re not entirely sure what they’re fighting for, but we hope it’s for a good cause.

The Swamp Rabbit Trail

Greenville is home to many great hiking and biking trails, but none are quite as quirky as the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Named after the swamp rabbit, a rare and elusive creature that may or may not exist, this trail takes you through scenic locations like a cemetery and an old mill. Who knows, maybe you’ll even spot a swamp rabbit along the way.
