History

Once known as the “Sewing Machine Capital of the World,” Rhode Island is now known for its breathtaking beaches, exquisite seafood, and, of course, the infamous Providence mafia.

Fun fact: Rhode Island was the first of the thirteen colonies to declare independence from Great Britain. It’s no coincidence that it’s also the only state with an official state drink - coffee milk. Because, why not?

Geography

Rhode Island has a total area of 1,214 square miles, which is smaller than some of the biggest US cities. You can literally drive through the entire state in less than an hour. But don’t let the size fool you; Rhode Island packs a mean punch! It has 400 miles of coastline, including some of the most gorgeous beaches on the east coast. Culture

Rhode Island’s culture is a blend of old and new, tradition and innovation. For example, the state festival is WaterFire, where the rivers in Providence are lit up by bonfires while masquerade balls and live music go on. It’s a magical experience. Rhode Island is home to Ivy League Brown University, which is one of the most prestigious institutions in the nation. But the state also offers a wide range of public and private colleges, including the famous Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), which was ranked #1 art and design school in the US by Business Insider.
