Months
Months are the twelve arbitrary segments in which our year is divided. From January to December, each month has its unique quirks, traditions, and festivities.
January
January, the first month of the year, is known for its cold, bleak weather and the impending doom of New Year’s resolutions. It is a time for gyms to be overcrowded and for people to pretend they like kale. Although if you’re a penguin, January is the time to get your groove on and mate like there’s no tomorrow.
February
Ah, February – the month of love, romance, and commercialized sappy sentiments. It is the month where every couple breaks their budget to show their affection, and singles either embrace their freedom or wallow in self-pity watching romantic movies. Ironically, it is also American Heart Month, reminding us that all that chocolate we consumed on Valentine’s Day is slowly clogging our arteries.
March
March, the start of spring, when allergies bloom and the sun shines through the storm clouds, is also National Women’s History Month. A time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history, from political activists to cultural influencers. Meanwhile, the rest of the world enjoys the madness of college basketball.
April
April is the month of April Fool’s Day, celebrated by playing trick on friends, family, and gullible coworkers. It is the only day where fake news is not a crime, and the internet comes alive with jokes and pranks. But be careful, for the day also lives up to its name- some pranks can backfire badly.
May
May is known for the arrival of spring flowers and the official start of BBQ season. It is also Mental Health Awareness Month, where we should reflect and show compassion towards people struggling with mental illness. After all, nothing cures depression like grilled ribs and potato salad.
June
The sixth month of the year is a time for summer vacations, graduation ceremonies, and a day dedicated to fathers. But for many people, it’s that month where YouTube bombards us with top 10 songs of the summer list compiled of songs you never heard of.
July
July – the height of summer, the sounds of fireworks and Independence Day celebrations, BBQs and pool parties. It’s hot, it’s sweaty, it’s a great time to avoid the sun, and it’s also National Ice Cream Month, which explains the long lines at Baskin Robbins.
August
August marks the end of summer break and a return to school for students. For adults, it’s just another blisteringly hot and humid month at work. It is also the month where crickets and cicadas sing their loud and unrelenting song, not letting people sleep.
September
September, the unofficial start of fall, where pumpkin spice invades everything from coffee to candles, sweater weather becomes a thing, and it’s also Self-Improvement Month. A time to reflect and make positive changes like starting that novel you’ve been meaning to write since last fall, or taking up a new exercise routine so that you can keep eating those pastries.
October
October is the month of Halloween; the time of scary movies, costume parties, and pumpkin carving. The eerie holiday is a time for ghosts, ghouls, and witches, but for some people, everyday life is scary enough. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to educate and remind people to stay vigilant about their health.
November
As the weather turns chilly, November is a month of gratitude, thanksgiving, and Black Friday madness. It is a time to appreciate the people in our lives, eat turkey (or tofurkey), and watch football games. For those brave souls who attempt to do NaNoWriMo, it is also a grueling month of constant writing and daily word counts.
December
December is the month of hot chocolate, Yule logs, and bulky sweaters. As the year comes to a close, it is a time of reflection, gift-giving, and family gatherings. It barely matters what religion you belong to or what culture you’re from; everyone can enjoy 31 days of winter wonderland, snowflakes, and Santa Claus.
In conclusion, months may seem like an arbitrary division of time, but each one carries its unique qualities and attributes. In the end, time is precious, so enjoy every month as it comes, from the cold and dark January to the cozy and festive December.
